They are cast aside, ignored, and sometimes openly ridiculed for the very gifts that set them apart from the common pattern. Yet these are not accidents or afterthoughts. They were made by God, deliberately, with a particular light that the world neither invented nor can replace. In the larger society they hold a place of real importance. It is they who invent tomorrow, who heal by means of beauty, who speak truths, and who remind us that the unfinished is still holy. And within 4NBT this is especially so. Here they are not merely tolerated; they are required. Their habit of seeing outside the accepted lines becomes the vision that guides the rest. Their depth of quiet makes room for others to breathe. Their imperfect honesty grants permission for the whole group to stop pretending. Their creative restlessness keeps the doors open toward what has not yet been seen. They sit among the others, not in spite of their differences, but because of them. A sketchbook may rest beside an open Bible; a question may fall into the middle of the gathering and alter the very air; a hand accustomed to designing reaches out and helps someone just learning. No one is asked to become smaller or louder than he is. They are simply invited to remain themselves in the presence of the others. That’s how work begins. One person’s unusual faithfulness feeds another’s courage. One person’s willingness to show the cracks gives the rest leave to uncover their own. Little by little those who were told they did not fit discover that they were made to belong exactly here. They remain broken, imperfect, and given to seeing at angles the world does not always understand. But they are no longer alone in the seeing. And that, already, is a beginning. AMEN 4NBT
